Notes from Mrs. Murphy
November 2011
We have been through seven weeks of school and the class has been super. They are more comfortable at school and actually helping each other. They are learning to use kind words and respecting their friends.
In September, we learned about ocean life, read books about fish, and made different kinds of fish at the art table. There were many small and large shells displayed at the science table.
In October we began to notice the leaves on the trees turning colors on our walks to the playground. We used various art techniques to make leaves to hang in our room. We made pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns to hang up too. Our class also hung some of our artwork in the hallway.
Science We collected pinecones; pieces of bark and acorns to place on our science table. There are also rocks and pretty leaves. We found pumpkins in our front yard and we each picked one to take home.
Math We are learning to recognize numbers and the amount they stand for. We count our snacks and the friends we have in line. We learned big and small, short and tall in our pumpkin stories. We counted pumkins, leaves and all sorts of things in our Halloween songs. Many of our finger plays use numbers and we each put a lovely autumn leaf on our tree at the big easel.
Letters and Language Arts We use letters on the alphabet chart daily. The helper of the day picks the letter that begins his name and finds its place on the magnetic alphabet board. We have an alphabet puzzle to use also. We are learning to spell our names and writing it if we can. At circle Mrs. Murphy asks us questions about the book she has read. We love looking at books at rest time.
Specials We learned to stretch and bend and eat healthy foods with Mrs. Kennedy. She also came to teach us Spanish. Mrs Wyrwa came to our classroom with her guitar to sing with us. We used musical instruments and had lots of fun. We saw a magic show and had fun at the Halloween parade and sing-a-long.
October was a busy month and we are now preparing for our Thanksgiving celebration. We are learning about the holiday and why it is celebrated.
Sincerely yours,
Angela Murphy
